| Great Mosque of Djenné West Afica | 
The actual date of construction of the primary masjid in Djenné is 
unknown, however dates as early as 1200 and as late as 1330 are advised.
 The earliest document mentioning the masjid is al-Sadi’s Tarikh 
al-Sudan which provides the first history, presumptively from the oral 
tradition because it existed within the middle seventeenth century. The 
tarikh states that a swayer Kunburu became a Muslim and had his palace 
force down and also the website become a masjid. He designed another 
palace for himself close to the masjid on the side. His immediate 
successor designed the towers of the masjid whereas the subsequent 
swayer designed the encompassing wall.

There
 is no alternative written info on the good masjid till the French 
individual René Caillié visited Djenné in 1828 and wrote "In Jenné could
 be a musjid designed of earth, head by 2 large however not high towers;
 it's discourteously created, although terribly giant. it's abandoned to
 thousands of swallows, that build their nests in it. This occasions a 
awfully disagreeable smell, to avoid that, the custom of claiming 
prayers during a tiny outer court has become common
