Great Mosque in Xian is one of the oldest and biggest mosques in China. Location of the mosque is located in the northwest of the Drum Tower (Gu Lou) on Lane Huajue.

According to historical records, the mosque was built in 742, during the Tang Dynasty (618-907). The entry of Islam in China brought by Arab and Persian traders and Afghanistan during the mid-seventh century when some of them settled in China and married women of Han State. Their descendants became Muslim today. Muslims play an important role in the unifications China during the Yuan and Ming Dynasty. Hence, other mosques were also built to honor them.

On one stele is the script of the famous calligrapher named Mi Fu of the Song Dynasty, the other is from Dong Qichang, a calligrapher of the Ming Dynasty. Calligraphy those for elegant yet powerful characters are considered a great treasure in the art of handwriting.

At the entrance to the third courtyard is a space that contains many steles from ancient times. As visitors enter the page, they will see the tower Xingxin, a place where Muslims come to attend prayer services. A 'Phoenix' placed on the fourth page, the main pavilion here, contains the Prayer Hall, the surrounding walls are covered with colorful designs. This hall can easily accommodate 1,000 people at one time and in accordance with traditional custom, prayer services are held five times each day at dawn, noon, dusk evening, and night.
In China, the Great Mosque is the only one open to visitors 8:00 to 7:30 Non-Muslims, however, are not allowed into the main prayer hall or during times of prayer.
